About BACEMARE
The Balkan Centre of Marine Research is dedicated to studying the intricate relationships between marine organisms and their environment and the impacts of human activities on marine ecosystems.
Our mission
Our mission is to motivate and maintain multidisciplinary essential and frontier applied marine research, education, training and marine policy development in the national and international context, generating prototype, innovative, and critical multidisciplinary expertise, fundamental knowledge, and new insights vital to underpin and improve longer-term sustainable and responsible marine management. Developing conservation strategies, both proactive and reactive, to protect and conserve marine ecosystems and species, and advocating for policies and practices that promote the conservation of marine ecosystems and species.
Our vision
The vision of the BACEMARE is to build a stepping stone in an effort to create a future in which the seas are healthy and resilient, with thriving ecosystems that support a diversity of marine species providing vital conveniences to humans, such as fisheries, climate regulation, and recreation, a future in which marine resources are sustainably managed, with responsible practices that minimize environmental impacts and ensure the long-term viability of marine ecosystems. A future in which marine management is inclusive and equitable, with the voices of all stakeholders, where citizen science is vital, including local communities and Indigenous peoples, being heard and incorporated into decision-making processes sustainably and democratically towards a total regeneration. A future, in which, through transformational change, the human impact becomes positive.
Our values
The BACEMARE values are the ethics and principles that guide our actions and shape our organisation’s culture. Our values are important in helping to define who we are and how we approach our work. Some of our values include the commitment to rigorous scientific research that is based on sound methodology and produces high-quality, credible results, the commitment to honesty, transparency, and accountability in all aspects of our work, including research, education, policy development, and advocacy and the commitment to innovative approaches, addressing complex marine issues, such as the sea pollution (plastics), overexploitation of fishing resources, unsustainable agriculture, destruction of habitats and ecological balance, Marine ecosystem Acidification, Coral Bleaching and sea temperature Rise. Furthermore, BACEMARE is aiming at using a long and crucial toolbox consisting among others: NbS strategies, circular economy methods, development of new and sustainable aquatic technologies, implementation of novel management strategies, and use of interdisciplinary research.
Our Team
The BACEMARE team comprises industry experts who are passionate about their work, have excelled in their field, and have an extensive background in a wide variety of several applications. The team of experts is dedicated to advancing our understanding of marine ecosystems, from the smallest microorganisms to the largest marine mammals. With innovative research methods and a commitment to scientific excellence, we are at the forefront of marine research, working towards a sustainable and thriving future for our seas and our environment in general. In parallel, as true believers of regeneration, our team is fighting against climate change and global warming through awareness and educational campaigns and targeted training sessions.
